Put it where it can work normally

Choose a firm surface where the speaker cannot easily be knocked into a drink or pulled down by its charging lead. Check the manufacturer's guidance about orientation and ventilation. A portable speaker designed to stand upright may not behave as intended when wedged on its side behind a cushion.

Keep its sound openings clear. Placing it inside a cupboard or beneath a pile of bags can make the sound muffled and encourage you to raise the volume unnecessarily. If the speaker vibrates against a lightweight shelf, try a more stable surface before adjusting audio settings.

Listen from the useful position

Play a familiar track at a modest level and listen from the chair, kitchen work area or garden seat where it will be used. The sound beside the speaker can be quite different from the sound across the room. Moving it away from a corner or a large reflective surface may change the balance without touching an equaliser.

Avoid assuming that the highest shelf is always the best place. Controls should remain accessible, and the speaker should not sit precariously near an edge. In a shared room, point the setup towards the listening area rather than compensating for an awkward position with more volume.

Treat outdoors as a different setting

Outside, check the model's water and dust protection rather than relying on the word portable. Keep charging connections dry and follow its care instructions after any exposure. A covered table is still worth choosing even for a device with some weather resistance.

Place the speaker close enough to the group that everyone can hear at a reasonable level. Consider neighbours and other people using the space. Spreading sound across an entire garden is a different task from having music beside a small table, and a small speaker need not attempt both.

Finally, keep the phone or other source in a sensible place too. A speaker position that sounds good is not useful if the connection drops whenever the source goes indoors. Test the normal arrangement for a few minutes and leave a clear, stable place to return the speaker when the session ends.
