Choose a safe viewing spot
Put the tablet on a stable stand where the recipe is visible without leaning over a hob or reaching across a sink. Leave room for bowls and chopping boards as they move around the worktop. A spot that looks clear before cooking may become crowded halfway through preparing a meal.
Keep the device and its charging cable away from heat, steam and splashes. Do not assume that a case makes it waterproof. If the cable crosses a working area or can catch on a drawer, move the setup. Charge the tablet beforehand when that avoids trailing a lead through the kitchen.
Prepare the recipe while your hands are clean
Open the recipe and read it from beginning to end before starting. Check whether quantities change with a serving selector, whether an ingredient is split between stages and whether preparation instructions are hidden in a separate note. A large enough text size is more useful than fitting the whole page onto a small screen.
Save an offline copy using a method the site or app permits if the connection is unreliable. Then briefly disconnect the network and check that the actual instructions remain available. A bookmark is only an address; it does not guarantee that the page has been stored. Avoid discovering this distinction when the oven is already heating.
Test the timer separately
Set a short test timer and make sure its alert can be heard from the part of the kitchen where you will work. Check the volume and any quiet-mode settings that affect the chosen timer app. Do not assume a visible countdown will always produce an audible alert.
If several timers are needed, label them by task where the app allows it. Potatoes and oven are easier to recognise than Timer 1 and Timer 2. For something that matters, a familiar separate kitchen timer can remain a useful backup; the tablet does not have to replace every tool.
Keep the screen manageable
Choose a sensible screen timeout for the session and return it afterwards if necessary. A display that repeatedly locks is irritating, but leaving a screen on indefinitely is not a requirement. Move through the instructions before your hands become wet or covered in flour, and avoid improvising gestures with utensils.
After cooking, unplug the device before cleaning it and follow its manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Wipe the stand and surrounding surface as appropriate, and put the tablet somewhere dry. If several people share it, leave the home screen simple enough that the next cook can find the recipe app without searching through unrelated notifications and downloads.
