Choose a repeated nuisance
A worthwhile lighting routine removes a small repeated task. Perhaps you always switch on a reading lamp after dinner, or turn off a forgotten desk light when you finish work. Choose one such task and describe it in an ordinary sentence. If the sentence contains several exceptions before you have even begun, a physical button may be more convenient.
Use a light that already responds reliably to manual control. Automation is a poor place to diagnose an unreliable connection. Check that everyone affected agrees with the intended behaviour, especially if the routine will turn a light off in a shared room.
Give the rule a narrow job
An automation usually has a trigger, optional conditions and an action. Availability depends on the platform and devices. For a first attempt, choose one trigger and one lamp. A fixed time is easy to observe; sunset can suit changing seasons if your system supports it and the location is correct.
Write down the expected result before entering settings. For example, the living-room lamp should come on at a comfortable brightness on weekday evenings. Decide separately whether it should turn off automatically. Do not add that second action simply because the app offers a convenient template.
Pick a test time a few minutes ahead, watch what happens, and then restore the intended schedule. Keep the lamp's normal manual control available. A routine that works only when nobody touches anything is unlikely to survive ordinary household use.
Check the exceptions in real life
Try a manual change after the routine has run. See whether another existing rule later reverses it. If two systems control the same lamp, inspect both rather than assuming the newest rule is responsible for every change.
Observe the routine over several ordinary days, including a day when your timetable changes. Adjust the trigger or remove it if it is more irritating than helpful. A single reliable lamp routine is a useful result on its own; there is no need to keep adding actions until it becomes difficult to understand.
