Choose the lamp before the bulb

Pick a lamp you use most evenings, rather than the most awkward ceiling fitting in the house. A table lamp makes it easier to try brightness, colour and controls without changing several things at once. Note its fitting, the available space inside the shade and any restrictions printed on the lamp. A matching cap does not guarantee that a physically larger smart bulb will fit.

Think about the actual improvement you want. Turning the lamp off from the sofa is a different requirement from changing its white tone while reading. White-only, adjustable-white and colour bulbs offer different features. Philips Hue's distinction between White and White ambience is one example of why the precise range name matters; another manufacturer's naming may be different.

Check what else you need

Read the setup requirements for that exact model. Find out whether it works directly with your existing network, needs a particular bridge, or requires another compatible controller. Include that equipment in the cost. A low bulb price can be misleading when it is only one component of the arrangement.

Check the phone app and any voice platform you intend to use. Do not make voice control the first test: establish that the bulb works through its supported app, then add another control method if it will help. Keep the packaging and setup code while you decide whether the system suits you.

Live with it for a few evenings

Try the lowest usable brightness as well as the brightest setting. A bulb that is comfortable for reading may still be too glaring beside a television when dimmed. Look at it through the actual shade, from your normal chair, with the other room lights both on and off.

Explain the controls to anyone sharing the room. The bulb needs electricity to respond to wireless commands, so the old habit of switching off its supply may make it appear unavailable. Decide on a convenient everyday control, such as a supported wireless button, before extending the setup.

Only buy more after this single lamp feels straightforward. Keep a note of the exact bulb model and the settings you liked. That is more useful for a second purchase than remembering that the first box simply said smart lighting.
