Read the label, then the instructions

A recessed Reset button is often used to restore factory settings. It is not simply another power switch. Holding it may remove the network name, password and other configuration, leaving you with a setup job rather than a brief interruption. Use the official restart procedure for your router or provider equipment.

Before restarting, record the symptom and the status lights. Check whether other people are on calls, sending files or relying on connected equipment. Tell them the connection will be interrupted. If the router is currently installing an update, follow the manufacturer's guidance and do not cut its power as a routine troubleshooting step.

Give the equipment time to reconnect

Some routers offer a Restart or Reboot option in their app or web interface. Others use a documented power-off procedure. Follow the method for your model, including any waiting period. If the home has separate modem, fibre equipment and router units, do not improvise a restart order from a different setup.

Allow the equipment to finish its startup sequence. Lights changing colour or flashing during that period may be normal. Compare them with the model's guidance rather than repeatedly interrupting power because the connection has not returned immediately.

Test the original problem

Reconnect a device and repeat the activity that failed. If the restart helped, make a note of when it happened and how long the improvement lasts. A fault that returns every evening or after a particular activity deserves investigation beyond another reboot.

If there is no improvement, keep the evidence and check the provider's service status. Avoid escalating automatically to a factory reset. That step should have a clear purpose, a way to restore required settings and the credentials needed to set the equipment up again.

One controlled restart can be a useful test. A sequence of power cuts without observing the result usually makes the situation harder to explain and can interrupt other devices that were working normally.
